Our first print from Detroit-based Nicola Kuperus was released to coincide with this year's Valentine's Day. Limited to an edition of 50, each photograph (matte finish with a 1/2 border) is signed and numbered by the artist.
Of "The Red Portrait" Kuperus writes:
"I am interested in ways of abstracting the figure, and then utilizing that abstraction to narrate a story. I feel that when the eyes of a person are removed there is some sort of humanity or connection that is removed. One must put the pieces together in order to obtain the information. From that point on an understanding of the situation can be formulated.
In this new piece entitled "The Red Portrait", I find myself particularly excited about the possibilities in new avenues of abstraction. While much of my work lacks full figures or heads, here is a full body, yet the eyes are still missing. When staring into the face, I find myself fixated on making a connection with the woman in red, but I can not. The question is then raised, is this strictly based on the absurd or is this portrait an empowerment play? There is so much that only eyes give away."
